Ok, I’d be as stoked as you to land Demitra…but there’s something a tad disturbing about this quote he gave while apparently high:

Trevor Linden Retires, Hall of Fame Shrugs

Well, after 20 seasons as a hockey player, 16 as a Vancouver Canuck, Trevor Linden has finally called it quits..or as Canucks fans say it: “Oh my effin gawd what on earth are we going to do now that the greatest player in the history of the universe has abandoned us and our team forever nooooooo!!”
Lets start by saying that I am not a Trevor Linden hater, and being critical of him doesn’t mean I think he stinks. Buuut…freaking the hell out when anybody dares say anything remotely negative about the guy only leads me to believe that deep down inside, you KNOW that Linden is a good player, but not a grrreat player in the overall context of hockey.
I bring this up not only because Canucks fans are redonkulous in their blind unabashed love for #16, but mostly because now that he’s retired, Vancouverites are screaming Hall of freaking Fame.
…whew….deep breaths…10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1…ok.. Thats better.
Canucks HoF? yup.
NHLPA HoF? yup.
The hall of fame of your heart? sure.
But NHL Hockey Hall of Fame??? please.
I’m not going to go on a tirade either dissecting his career stats and all that crap, I think that just looking at the class that went into the hall last year and who is up for induction into the hall of fame this year - it pretty much sums up what it takes to be a Hall of Famer:

Do I like Dave Nonis? Sure.
Do I think he’s a great General Manager? Meh.
Do I think that firing him after only three seasons at the helm for the Canucks is a good idea?
F**K YEAH!
This is kind of what I bitched and moaned about near the trade deadline. The Canucks didn’t make a move, but I disagree that it was about “mortgaging their future” or availiable players…it came down to the fundamental flaw with this entire organization:
A commitment to excellence.
Why Can’t We Win?

A wise man once said, “There is no try….only do!”
Now granted it wasn’t really a man, and in fact was a small green puppett, but that shouldn’t diminish the wisdom behind the quote.
Every team “tries” doesn’t it? And given the choice, would certainly opt to be in the playoffs, or to hoist the Stanley Cup as opposed to improving their handicap throughout May and June?
So effort aside, where do most teams fall short? Personnel? Coaching? General Managership?
Sure, all of the above…but if there was one blatant (and consistant) piece to the Vancouver Canucks dismal late season play, and it was all between the legs.
