Vancouver Canucks Movie - Celebrating Not Winning and Stuff

November 7, 2008

losingmotivationalposter2.jpgPeople make sports movies for lots of reasons.

Like being a massive underdog and winning anyway, or coming together as a team to overcome adversity, overthrowing racism and indifference, or even just to celebrate the awesomeness of what its like to be on a team.

There is usually a common thread running through these movies, and it usually pertains to one of two things:

Winning, or losing…a lot.

Your team won a championship? Hell, make a damn movie. Lose for 80 or 100 straight years? Sure, make a damn movie.

But…wallow in perpetual mediocrity for 38 years? Make a movie?

Ya, Watch the video after the jump:

Whats that all about? I guess its another attempt at solidify an expanding bitter fanbase.

But why make a movie about super fans that aren’t really even known to be super fans?

Been to a Canadiens game? Holy crap, those are fans that need a movie made for them.

Toronto fans, and their painfully unwavering loyalty to a team that continues to sell out games, sell jerseys and lose and lose and lose…now thats a movie.

But what are Canucks fans known for?

An embarrassingly low level of hockey knowledge, a passion - be it extremely loyal - but bordering on delusional…to a point that meaningful discussion on a message board reads like it was written like a handful of gas huffing eight year olds, and a fickle nature bordering on malicious.

This is a movie?

Sounds more like a Wesley Snipes straight to VHS special to me.

I have to ask myself; Who wants to go see this? Fans that need some serious reassurance of how awesome they are? Or fans that truly believe that the last 38 years is something historical, and needs archiving. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the “everybody is a winner” mantra.

I want a damn cup, and I’m not in the mood to have a kumbaya hand holding patchouli incense burning love-in until it happens.
