We’re Not Alone in the Suck
July 28, 2008
Ok dammitt, I got lambasted by a Calgary fan this weekend about one of the only indisputable parts of being a Canucks fan: The holy grail.
I can argue divisions, players, competition, coaching…but there’s one thing that none of us can dispute:
We haven’t won a Championship in 37 years. (And if your hanging on to that Vancouver Millionaires bulls**t from 1915 you need to punch yourself in the face).
In an effort to build a defense to this immutable evidence of our suck-dom, I have researched the historical Stanley Cup non-winning streaks that have plagued many other franchises in the NHL. And really, we barely share in the suck-dom.
Heres the list, Courtesy of Wikipedia:
| Chicago Blackhawks | Won Stanley Cup: 1960–61 | 46 seasons |
| Toronto Maple Leafs | Won Stanley Cup: 1966–67 | 40 seasons |
| Los Angeles Kings | never (inception of franchise in 1967–68) | 40 seasons |
| St. Louis Blues | never (inception of franchise in 1967–68) | 40 seasons |
| Buffalo Sabres | never (inception of franchise in 1970–71) | 37 seasons |
| Vancouver Canucks | never (inception of franchise in 1970–71) | 37 seasons |
| Boston Bruins | Won Stanley Cup: 1971–72 | 35 seasons |
| Washington Capitals | never (inception of franchise in 1974–75) | 33 seasons |
| Philadelphia Flyers | Won Stanley Cup: 1974–75 | 32 seasons |
| Phoenix Coyotes | never (franchise entered the NHL in 1979–80) | 28 seasons |
| New York Islanders | Won Stanley Cup: 1982–83 | 24 seasons |
| Calgary Flames | Won Stanley Cup: 1988–89 | 18 seasons |
| Edmonton Oilers | Won Stanley Cup: 1989–90 | 17 seasons |
| San Jose Sharks | never (inception of franchise in 1991–92) | 16 seasons |
| Pittsburgh Penguins | Won Stanley Cup: 1991–92 | 15 seasons |
| Ottawa Senators | never (inception of franchise in 1992–93) | 15 seasons |
| Montreal Canadiens | Won Stanley Cup: 1992–93 | 14 seasons |
| Florida Panthers | never (inception of franchise in 1993–94) | 14 seasons |
| New York Rangers | Won Stanley Cup: 1993–94 | 13 seasons |
| Nashville Predators | never (inception of franchise in 1998–99) | 9 seasons |
| Dallas Stars | Won Stanley Cup: 1998–99 | 8 seasons |
| Atlanta Thrashers | never (inception of franchise in 1999–2000) | 8 seasons |
| Minnesota Wild | never (inception of franchise in 2000–01) | 7 seasons |
| Columbus Blue Jackets | never (inception of franchise in 2000–01) | 7 seasons |
| Colorado Avalanche | Won Stanley Cup: 2000–01 | 6 seasons |
| New Jersey Devils | Won Stanley Cup: 2002–03 | 4 seasons |
| Tampa Bay Lightning | Won Stanley Cup: 2003–04 | 3 seasons |
| Carolina Hurricanes | 2005–06 | 2 seasons |
| Anaheim Ducks | 2006–07 | 1 season |
In all honesty, we barely even scratch the suface of suckliciousness. The Blues and Kings are not only older, but as of late have really set the standard for being stupid.

As the grandson of Cyclone Taylor, former Vancouver Millionaires player, I am deeply disappointed in your disregard for all the Millionaires have done for hockey and the city of Vancouver.
Furthermore, I challenge you to name a better Rover than my grandfather, past or present.
Shame on You,
Hurricane Taylor
