Dave Nonis Gets Fired - Brilliant!
April 15, 2008
Do I like Dave Nonis? Sure.
Do I think he’s a great General Manager? Meh.
Do I think that firing him after only three seasons at the helm for the Canucks is a good idea?
F**K YEAH!
This is kind of what I bitched and moaned about near the trade deadline. The Canucks didn’t make a move, but I disagree that it was about “mortgaging their future” or availiable players…it came down to the fundamental flaw with this entire organization:
A commitment to excellence.
Since 1972 just making the playoffs has been acceptable, building for the future has been acceptable, putting a decent “product” on the ice without a championship has been (sigh) acceptable.
But if you look at some of the greatest sports organizations out there, you will see parallells only in philosophy and not in technique or personell. From the top down the New England Patriots are about winning Super Bowls, period. The Detroit Red wings and the (this sucks to say) New York Yankees all from top to bottom have one thing in common;
Screw rebuliding, don’t just win now, win ALWAYS.
What the Canucks lacked at the trade deadline was not trade bait, or a workable deal…they needed a general manager and ownership that was willing to take risks and aggressively pursue a Cup, not just the post season.
Acquilini has seen his investment stagnantly hover in mediocrity for 3 seasons and has made it clear that it is not acceptable. This guy wants to win. Period.
And frankly I like his moxy.

Got something to say?

After listening to the most frightening press conference ever, this article calmed my jangled nerves.
However, I’m still very worried that we may have a bandwagon riding “Canucks fan” as an owner. It didn’t seem like this guy has any plan at all. The media, God bless-em, were lobbing him easy questions right over the plate to give him a chance to spit out a sane answer, but all I heard was contradictory statements and “we just want what our fans want”…Have you ever listened to what the average Canucks fan wants? I’m going to stalk up on water and food supplies…
