Why Can’t We Win?
April 7, 2008
A wise man once said, “There is no try….only do!”
Now granted it wasn’t really a man, and in fact was a small green puppett, but that shouldn’t diminish the wisdom behind the quote.
Every team “tries” doesn’t it? And given the choice, would certainly opt to be in the playoffs, or to hoist the Stanley Cup as opposed to improving their handicap throughout May and June?
So effort aside, where do most teams fall short? Personnel? Coaching? General Managership?
Sure, all of the above…but if there was one blatant (and consistant) piece to the Vancouver Canucks dismal late season play, and it was all between the legs.
It’s cojones people. It’s pure moxy.
I’m taken for a moment, back to the trade deadline, when Vancouver hosted Colorado after the Av’s acquired Peter Forsberg and Adam Foote.
After a decent start, we were all reminded of one of the key pieces to any championship calibre team as Colorado newcomer Adam Foote blocked a half a dozen point shots, and Captain Joe Sakic (who I think has an extra pair of stones he straps on before every game) scored with 14 seconds left to send the game into OT, where Joe posterized our best player to seal the win. We were once again missing our manhood.
When the Canucks needed a player to man up, we didn’t have one. And we got bullied out of a win.
See, when you pull on a Detroit jersey or a Montreal jersey, you feel like a bad ass MoFo. You immediately get a swagger about you. There a distinct air about the organization and the players in it.
The Canucks jersey comes with its own Blackberry and Gucci man satchel.
